We have heard of vehicles that can be put to use without the operator being physically present in them. Their control is achieved by use of a series of cables or command signal from a source in which the operator is present. Remotely operated vehicles also known as ROV are used in waters and have the ability of attaining depths that divers cannot reach. They have found a number of uses as a result of this ability.

Scientists have taken this to their advantage and are using these vehicles in a number of ways. Through them they are in a position to carry out experiments in the deep sea, collect specimens to work with in the main land. They are also in a position to identify the types of creatures and plants that exist at certain depths. Through them they have been able to discover new findings related to their field.

Exploration is not limited to the dry land only but is being carried out in deep waters. Such regions may pose a challenge for human explorers to personally undertake the exploration. This equipment is perfectly used to carry out these tasks. Through their use, minerals have been discovered and samples collected for further testing.

ROVs are fitted with cameras and video recorders. This means that they get to take images as well as videos while in use. In case of accidents happening at the waters and the vessels sinking, they are used in identifying the location and any possible survivors. Also through them, ancient wrecks such as the Titanic were discovered.

Valued items may need to be retrieved from such wrecks at one point. Achieving this by use of divers is risky and may not be easily achieved. This equipment is availed in a manner that they can assume the human roles. They are therefore used in retrieving of equipment such as the black boxes and their ability to open compartments may save lives in case victims are trapped in an enclosure.

The military has embraced this technology in a number of ways. In times of attack, they come in handy as they are in a position of effectively determining an incoming attack vessel. They also find use in exploring foreign waters when planning an attack. Another use is in patrolling the water bodies a nation owns as a matter of enhancing national security.

In films, we have seen scenes captured in deep waters. Some of these scenes comprise of regions that cannot support human life or are impossible for human to access. Such scenes are captured through the use of ROV. The nature documentaries makers also use them when covering topics concerning deep waters.

The gas and oil industry are among the top purchasers of these equipment. Deep sea beds are most likely to be rich in oil and gas deposits. The drillers are able to monitor their activities at these depths through them. In case of oil spills, the vehicles are also used to determine the damage caused and possible ways for handling the situation.
